Make-up Trend: Clear Gloss

Clear gloss might feel like your make-up first, but as Freida Pinto reminded us as at a Burberry party in London, see-through shine has its place. If you've got glowy skin and well-appointed eyes, a dose of colorless sheen can be just what you need to turn heads—no nudity required.

M.A.C Senior Artist Vimi Joshi: Behind The Scenes

Lipstick and kajal are so yesterday. Makeup's now an art form that can transform you. It's governed by trends and let's admit it, Bollywood would not be half as glamorous if it were not for the magic of makeup. M.A.C Senior Artist Vimi Joshi, gives us the lowdown on the makeup secrets of her famous clientele, what it's like behind the scenes at a fashion show and what are the latest trends to adopt.

On the sets
The look in Bollywood is classic. Actors work under harsh lights and the camera misses nothing, so the makeup has to be flawless and needs touching up and refreshing often. However, most actors want to look like themselves onscreen, preferring smoky eyes and nude lips.

Backstage at a fashion show
To the untrained eye, the buzz around most fashion shows seems similar gorgeous models slip into fabulous dresses while the glitterati take their seats in the front row. But Vimi says that each fashion capital has its own unique vibe. "It really depends on which city you are in. New York is arty and there are many celebrities. London is edgier. Milan is sexy and Paris is sophisticated."

If you have been backstage at a fashion show, you will see makeup artists frantically working on models with clockwork precision. This is courtesy many trials and rehearsals. It's the entire team, comprising the designer, hairdresser, stylist and the makeup artist who work on the look. However, Vimi says that it's finally the designer's vision. She says, "There is so much creativity. Once we might be doing a geisha, the next time a Marilyn Monroe, then an Audrey Hepburn."

But it isn't all peachy when you have tired models and a stressed-out designer going hysterical. "You just breathe and pray and keep your cool. But if no one yelled, it would not be Fashion Week." she says. What also helps is that Vimi does a two-minute aromatherapy facial massage on all the models to calm them, after which they "melt in my hands".

Looks you can try out
The 80s are back with a vengeance. But you don't have to copy their makeup brush stroke for brush stroke. Be tactful and employ what is now being called Punk Couture. Vimi says, "This look is inspired by punk rockers, but is more edgy, glamorous and sophisticated. It's more punk perfection. Couture means tailor-made. So take this look and adapt it to your face." This look is all about strong eyes that scream attitude. Smudge the kajal or eye shadow to get that sultry smoky look.

To replicate the next trend, turn to the Hollywood red carpet. All the beauties strutting their stuff have perfect, almost glowing skin. For this, you need perfectly hydrated skin so use a water-based moisturiser. Pick a foundation closest to your skin tone and finish off with a light pink blush on for that sweet-girl blush and a light layer of lip-gloss. Jennifer Lopez is a great reference, as her makeup is minimal to highlight her glowing skin.

For the festive season
Festivities have begun. Navratri, Diwali and the wedding season will soon be around the corner. With every look that you change, you must make sure your makeup changes accordingly. Vimi suggests you celebrate your Indianness. "I travel around the world and Europeans are spending thousands on buying products for an ideal skin tone. Look for inspiration in the Indian textures and colors." For the festive season, mix matte and shimmer so you don't overdo either. You could have a shimmer eye shadow with a matte finish one applied into the crease of the eyelid, hence pushing forth the shimmered eyelid. Use colors from your outfit in your makeup as well.

Starry eyes: Vimi on her famous clientele

Freida Pinto: Vimi says, "I love her. I have worked with her a couple of times and she is one of the nicest, most down-to-earth people I've met. We first worked together on a photo shoot and then for the Toronto and Dubai film festivals (above). We started off with the nude look, but then got creative. She is open to new looks and ideas."

Bipasha Basu: "We did the Harper's Bazaar shoot with her in London and she was incredible. First we did a nude-gold look and then she said, 'Come on, let's get creative.' So we looked at the clothes and settled on this forest-murky-green look. Bipasha is constantly pushing the creative boundaries."

Dita Von Teese: "With her, you know you are going to be doing the pale skin and red lips; the 1950s look. But the key is that you retain her image."

Amitabh Bachchan: "He is such a gentleman. I met him backstage at an awards function. He literally needed just a touch-up."

Helen: "I love her. She is a beauty icon for India. She does her makeup herself. Helen is a beautiful woman inside out. Her makeup is more subdued and natural now."

Vidya Balan: "I see her for who she is. She is one of the most spiritually grounded women I have met. I love working with her. We actually did a green and blue look for her for a newspaper and she loved it."

Katrina Kaif: "Stunning is the only word I can use for her. How can you improve perfection? Whenever I have worked with her, it was always a very natural look."

Padma Lakshmi at the Emmy's 2009

Padma Lakshmi looked like a goddess at the Emmy's this year in glowy skin and barely-there make-up on her eyes. Looks like she has about to coats of mascara on, eyeliner on her top lid, and peachy-pink cheeks. Her lips are a matte pinky-neutral nude.

Watch this space for more.

Make-up Trend: Nude Peachy Cheeks

At a recent event at Lakme Fashion Week, Genelia sported nude, peachy cheeks. This is a look that can be done, if you just use the right blush. With Genelia's skintone, that sheer peachy blush looked gorgeous against her smoky eyes and really brought out that glow.

Make-up Trend: Poreless, Glowy Skin

We've all tried scrubs, lotions and various facials in our quest for poreless skin, but dermatologists say it's the simple things that yield glowing complexions. For skin as even as Freida Pinto's at Fashion Week, try this little trick: splash your face with warm water to loosen impurities, then wipe away makeup with a moist towelette. Because your face is already mostly clean, you'll be able to do the job with a few swipes, rather than rubbing surface dirt deeper into pores.

Cosmo's Celeb Beauty Tricks for that Perfect Pick-Me-Up

Shilpa Shetty
"However lousy I’m feeling, getting my hair done makes all the difference. A good blow dry and my confidence is back. And if there’s time after that for a little retail therapy, of course, then it’s perfect!"

Sonam Kapoor
"I think a good complexion can hide many sins! So good skin, maintained with good quality products, works for me every time!"

Katrina Kaif
"I’m a very no makeup person off camera, so on days I feel dull, I just up my intake of water, fresh fruits and generally try and detoxify. What you put in is what you get!"

Amrita Rao
"Smoky eyes perk me up, even on my most down and off days. The rest of the face is just nude lips and a blush."

Malaika Arora Khan
"I’m a spa girl. A relaxing massage, hot oil treatment, aromatherapy, body scrub, I could just go on and on! Leave me at a spa and watch all my blues evaporate away."

Riya Sen
"False eyelashes! Sounds strange but they make me face the work a little more confidently on days I’m low or feeling down. And some perfume goes a long way, too!"

Deepika Padukone
"It’s awful for us to have bad-mirror days because it carries forward the next day, when we see horrid pictures of us in the paper. So if I’m not looking or feeling my best, I simply give some TLC to my skin. Maybe a mask, a facial or even a body wrap if there’s time. If my skin glows, I’m good to go."

Bipasha Basu
"If my skin feels dull, or I’m feeling low, I hit the gym or do anything that’s physically strenuous. Exercise equals endorphins and these feel-good hormones look good on your face. Top it off with a little gloss and you’re back to glowing!"

Celina Jaitley
"On days I’m not looking good, I just pile on kohl to make my eyes stand out, moisturize intensely and head out. No more makeup for me!"

Make-up Trend: Purple-Lined Eyes

At the Toronto International Film festival Rani Mukherjee's eyes had a smoky purple touch to them. To try your luck with the look, rim your eyes with a black pencil, and use a soft brush to dab shimmery eggplant purple shadow along the top and bottom lash lines. Blend the shadow upwards, keeping it heavier on the lid, and fading along the brow bone.

Make-up Trend: Shimmery, Berry Lips

On Grazia's latest cover, Deepika Padukone's makeup artist Subhash Vagal chose a deep berry with a hint of shimmer. Keep a lip-centric look neat by first rimming just inside the borders of the mouth with a coordinating lip pencil, then filling in with lipstick. Slip the pencil in your clutch and use it for touch-ups—it's more precise than color from a tube.

Make-up Trend: A Hint of Flush

In the latest movie Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, Kareena gave her cheeks a hint of bronzy peachiness. To get the same wash of dewy color, dab sheer creamy blush onto the apples of your cheeks and blend with your fingers—the creaminess is just right for a subtle sheen.

Make-up Trend: Easy, Drama-ful Eyes

Want the sexiness of dramatic eyes without eye shadow and blending? Mahima Chaudhary shows us how to at the Kimaya Fashion Preview. Rim your entire eye with eyeliner. Keep the line very thin—the edginess comes from extending the color way out at the corner. Finish by tucking in a few clusters of individual fake lashes, topping with black mascara—and leaving the bottom lashes completely bare.

Make-up Trend: Luscious Lashes

Who doesn't love a believable fake? To give your peepers a sexy flutter like Geeta Basra did at a recent photoshoot of hers. Instead of using a full strip of lashes, tuck small clusters of lashes along the outer corner of each eye. Then apply a generous coat of black eyeliner to hide any glue.

Make-up Trend: Matching Cheek and Lip Combos

Rani Mukherjee at Dil Bole Hadippa Promotional Event

Malaika Arora Khan at launch of The Perfect Bride

At recent events, Rani and Malaika sported a 'same cheek and lip combo.' A trend that I am loving is peachy-nude blush with nude lips a la Rani Mukherjee and pink cheeks and lips on Malaika Arora Khan. When wearing these hues on your lips, it helps to create cohesiveness by adding a sheer wash of the same hue to your cheeks. You can also dab the actual lipstick onto cheeks for a dewy, cream blush look.

Vimi Joshi on Mineral Make-up

Everyone knows that mineral make-up is the new rage. ‘New’ is a subjective term, however, for minerals in make-up have been around for decades. What is new are the formulations and mixes, the combination of ranges as well as the new marketing (not to mention prices!) by companies all around the globe.

The new ranges are promising much: this loose powder is often hypoallergenic, without perfume, alcohol or preservatives.

Make-up artists and dermatologists are recommending it highly, especially for more sensitive areas like the eyes, which they say is a particularly good investment.

“Mineralized eye make-up is fast becoming a huge beauty trend,” says Vimi Joshi, M.A.C Make-up Artist. “The eye shadows blend into the skin creating a smooth finish that looks like satin. That’s why a lot of women are turning towards mineralized make-up. It’s finish is very natural and appears dewy on the skin”.

Since the prime ingredients used in mineral make-up are inorganic this means that bacteria and microbes cannot live in the make-up and infect the skin. Mica, titanium dioxide, zinc and iron oxides and ultramarine pigments are used.

“The mineral oils in the eyeshadow are very nourishing and conditioning for the skin. They contain a blend of 77 mineral oils that are infused in water as part of a yeast extracting process. Pigments are added and the mixture is baked and shaped for 24 hours,” adds Joshi.

Given below are some tips and information you may require to master this powdery medium which may be harder to apply but is worth the results

Eye these advantages
Mineral make-up not only has the benefit of being a natural product that is good for your skin, it also stays put until you wash (or perspire!) it off. The ability of minerals to adhere to skin means that mineral eyeshadows are very crease-resistant and won’t fade. Mineral make-up’s texture is lighter and different. Even with more coverage, experts say you’ll see a natural, translucent radiance and more of your skin, which can breathe.

Pick the right shades
The eyeshadow shades selected are based on personal taste and the colors that look good with the skin tone and eyes.

Daytime eyeshadow
For less dramatic daytime colors use just one or two shades of shadow; a medium shade on the lid and a lighter shade under the brow and towards the inside of the eye.

Dramatic eyeshadow for the night
To achieve a more dramatic night-time look, use three shades of color. Start with the technique for day-time application, and then add a third, darker shade to the crease and outer eye.

Applying Mineral Eye Shadow

To look like a pro while applying mineral eyeshadow, follow the steps below:

Step 1: After selecting the right match of colors sprinkle some of each powdered mineral eye shadow into the lid of its jar. This will help avoid using too much and reduce wastage.

Step 2: Using an oval or angled eyeshadow brush, dip the tip into the loose powder and then tap the bush on the edge of the lid to remove excess minerals.

Step 3: Swirl your brush in the lid, to help the mineral powder adhere evenly to the bristles of the brush. Then tap the brush on the lid to remove any excess minerals.

Step 4: Sweep the light shadow under your brow and towards your inner eye, blending for a natural look. Then dip the brush into the medium shadow, again tapping on the jar lid to remove excess powder. Sweep the medium color over your lid, and blend.

Tip: A little bit of mineral shadows goes a long way.

Make-up Trend: Apricot, Peach Lips

At Kolkata mall's inauguration Karisma Kapoor, glowed in no make-up except peach lip gloss. She looked absolutely radiant, apricot brings out the peachy undertones in your skin which makes you look healthy and glowy. A sheer peach lipstick works too.

Katrina Kaif Signed As Olay Brand Ambassador

In addition to brand ambassador Sushmita Sen promoting Olay Total Effects, Katrina Kaif has been signed as the brand ambassador of international cosmetic giant Oil of Olay that launched the newly formulated White Radiance range in India.

A source close to Kats adds, "Katrina is a youth icon of today. The international brand found Kats to be the apt model to market their product."

Make-up Trend: Chocolate Brown and Gold Eye Shadow

In Kareena Kapoor's latest Globus ads, Mickey Contractor used metallic chocolate and gold, because matte colors look too dull for the evening. Stand out by applying M.A.C Mulch Eye Shadow in the crease and at the outer corner of the eye, then brush M.A.C Goldmine Eye Shadow in the inner corner and the middle of the lid, blending the edges well.

A-Lister's Tips and Tricks

In an age when beauty comes at a price, with botox having become a lunch-time necessity, one would think the search for glowing skin and shiny eyes would end at a cosmetic surgeons table. While short cuts could be temporarily gratifying, some of the most beautiful women in the country still swear by age-old methods to preserve that beautiful face.

Like fashion buyer Rita Dhody who says yoga and meditation has helped her slow the aging process. “Nothing has helped me more than that. It is not a quick-fix method, but the results of yoga are tremendous on your skin and general well-being. You realise that your ageing process gets slowed down too. Do not sacrifice your workouts for anything. Keep your fitness level high and your skin will remain glowing,” she says.

Sultry siren Bipasha Basu agrees. She says nothing works better than a disciplined life. “I have always emphasized on maintaining discipline. If you have too wild a life, it reflects on your skin. Regular exercise, balanced diet, mandatory eight hours of sleep and lots of water makes your skin glow and stay glowing for the longest time.”

While H20 seems to be the elixir of beauty, former model Anna Bredmeyer has some other natural beauty secrets. “I use malai for moisturising my skin and I drink white pumpkin juice every morning to cleanse my system. I have been doing this for many years and it works wonders.”

“Eating healthy is of foremost importance,” asserts actor Deepika Padukone. “However much you outwardly take care of your skin, if you are not eating right, nothing works.”

Actor Simone Singh's weapon is cucumbers. “I eat loads of cucumbers through the day. I eat lots of carbs and proteins during the day which are more or less acidic in nature and cucumber is alkaline — it helps keep the balance. But yes, if you want a quick-fix method to look beautiful, then use a voluminizing mascara. Its effects are miraculous!”

Actor Urmila Matondkar enthuses, “Scrub your skin squeaky clean, no matter how tired you are. And use as little make-up as possible. Trust me, in the long run your skin will thank you for not assaulting it with make-up all the time.”

And if you are still looking tired, model Noyonika Chatterjee advises, “One beauty trick is to use a lot of kajal as it brightens up the entire face. So when in doubt, be sure to use kajal. Also, rubbing ice wrapped in a cloth is another great idea to give that fresh feel to your skin.”
