Sushmita Sen's Beauty Secrets [Vogue India]

As an actress, my skin is exposed for long hours to damage from heavy make-up, lights, pollution and UV rays which have a long-term detrimental effect on skin. My advice is to drink a lot of water, get enough sleep, use sun protection and wear products that enhance your looks but don't cover up your natural beauty. Use Besan Ka Aata (Gram flour) with malai (clotted cream) as a scrub to soften and cleanse the skin. And a concoction of neem (azadirachta indica) and honey to drink; it's not as bad as it sounds! An in-flight ritual I have is that, I make sure I take off all my make-up. If I've been shooting outdoors in too much mud and dust, I oil my hair before boarding.

Make-up Trend: Sultry Smoky Eyes

Looking casual, yet chic on this month's issue of Vogue India is none other than Deepika Padukone. MAC's Mickey Contractor focused on a smudged, smoky kohl eye, "We aimed for a not-so-perfect look, a little messy." To get her look, line your upper and lower lashes with a creamy black pencil. Apply dark charcoal powder shadow on your lids. Add a shimmery ivory shadow in your inner corners and brow bone. Mickey contrasted that with a nude lip and gives us a key tip to achieve this look, "Use concealer with lipgloss for the perfect nude lip which is huge this season."

Make-up Trend: Healthy Skin

In a gorgeous and colorful kurti at a promotional event for her latest movie Housefull, Lara Dutta made a statement with flawless and nourished looking skin. To get your skin looking like her, start your make-up routine with an antioxidant rich moisturizer, neutral liquid foundation and a touch of loose powder.  After the powder sets the foundation, dusted bronzing powder on your cheeks, chin and forehead. A swipe of light coral blush applied finishes the look.

Make-up Trend: Lush Lashes

A full strip of false lashes can feel drag quuen-ish, but not if you pull it off as artfully as Preity Zinta at the IPL Awards. Things to keep in mind: first off, before applying, be sure to trim the lashes to fit the length of your lid. And secondly, keep the rest of your eye makeup subtle—a stripe of liquid liner and a wash of neutral shadow is all the extra pop you'll need.

Make-up Trend: Subtle Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid liner doesn't have to look vampy, especially if you apply it as artfully as Sushmita Sen did at the launch of the Charcoal Exhibition by Gautam Patole. Rather than using the tip of the brush, draw the side along your upper lashline. You'll create a broader, steadier line, which means tiny imperfections won't be as visible. Top with a wash of sheer pink shadow to set the line and tone it down.

Hair Trend: Curled Ponytails

Known for her statuesque body, Sameera Reddy inspires a new wave with her hair, with a sleek, coiled ponytail on the cover of Jade Magazine. To get her look, start with completely smooth, straight hair, and pull hair back into a low ponytail. Curl the your ponytail with taking hair farthest away from your face into two-inch sections. Use a one-inch barrel curling iron. To prevent locks from going limp, wait five minutes before touching each tendril released from the iron.

Kareena Kapoor's Beauty Secrets in Vogue India [April 2010]

In the latest issue of Vogue India, Kareena Kapoor spills the beans on her beauty secrets. She’s always in the limelight--for her roles and her glam footprint. Here, she takes us on her beauty route.
MAKE-UP MANTRA
During the day, I wear no make-up at all. For a night out, I line my eyes with black kohl. I also love a smoky-eyed look with Yves Saint Laurent Wood Brown Long-Lasting Eye Pencil. Plus, I curl my eyelashes and use lots of Yves Saint Laurent Faux Cils Mascara. For lips, I prefer to use a pale pink lipstick.

HANDBAG ESSENTIALS
Under all the junk (my wallet, credit card and odd papers) you’ll find my favorite, M.A.C Cherish Lipstick, M.A.C Improper Copper Cream Colour Base and my Chanel Noir Le Crayon Khol. I can’t live without my kohl pencil.

SCENT OF A WOMAN
I love Jean Paul Gaultier. For special occasions, I apply Un Jardin en Méditerranée by Hermes.

BEAUTY ICONS
I think Scarlett Johansson is beautiful. I like her face, her body and her hair. I also love Julia Roberts for always looking fresh.

TRESS TALK
I love oiling my hair with a mix of almond, castor, coconut and olive oils. I do this once a month. I use a Kerastase shampoo specifically for dry hair, and follow it with a blow-dry.

BEAUTY RITUALS
I use a Lancome face wash. I try to avoid creams because of their chemical content. In cold weather, I use Clarins HydraQuench Rich Cream, and on the beach I use a Clarins sunscreen. I don’t believe in facials.

DIET CHART
I’m a vegetarian and believe in eating lots of green vegetables, like spinach, fenugreek and broccoli. I eat healthy meals with lots of whole grains and don’t cut down on carbs. I eat every 2-3 hours. At night, I usually have dal, vegetables, curd and roti or brown rice. I try to drink at least 6-8 glasses of boiled water every day.

FITNESS REGIME
I do ashtanga and power yoga for an hour every day.

Make-up Trend: Slate Smoky Eyes

At the Housefull ICC 20-20 World Cup Media Meet, Lara Dutta accentuated her pale hued blouse with slate toned shadow. To get Lara's look, rim your inner lids with metallic gray liner, which is sexy and sparkly, but not heavy. Blend a silvery slate shadow on your lids, and blend a dark gray-black shadow on the outter corners. Add a swipe of black liner under the bottom lashes and blend a nude shadow along the brow bone. To make the eyes really shine, fill your brows a bit: A strong, sculpted brow provides a great frame for smoky eye makeup.

Make-up Trend: Bronzy Smoky Eyes

Looking demure and absolutely gorgeous, Kajol gives us yet another beautiful cover this month. Remember this one from last month? Gracing the cover of Anokhi Magazine, Kajol looked stunning in bronzy smoky eyes and pale pink lips. To recreate her look, apply a bronzy powder shadow on the lids and black matte eye shadow in the crease and outter lids, blend the two well. Line upper and lower lashes with black kohl, then follow with two coats of black mascara. Line your lips with a neutral lip pencil and apply a pale pink lipstick on top.

Make-up Trend: Sheer Coral Lips

On the latest issue of Graphiti Magazine, newbie Shraddha Kapoor showed off some natural skin and a pop of coral lips. Coral lips can be a bit overbearing when applied the wrong way, to get it to look right and perfectly spring-like, trace the inside of your lip line with a pencil one shade lighter than your natural lip color. Blend all over your lips with your finger. Top the lip pencil with a moisturizing, sheer coral lipstick.

Make-up Trend: Intense Smoky Eyes

On the latest issue of Verve, make-up artist Mickey Contractor balanced Bipasha Basu's intense smoky eyes with bronzy cheeks and nude lips. To get the look, sweep shimmery black eye shadow over your lids, blending it into the creases and around the outer corners of the eyes. Rim your upper and lower lashes with black kohl, starting at the inner corners and smudging outward with your finger. Apply a thick stripe of black liquid liner along your upper lashes. Finish with black mascara on both top and bottom lashes. Contour your cheeks with bronzer. Apply a beige-nude matte lipstick on your lips.

Make-up Trend: Warm Blush

As we approach the beginning of summer, our make-up changes as well. On the latest issue of Femina Katrina Kaif sizzled in a rich, skin warming blush. Pink cheeks are cute, but for a healthier, more neutral flush, go with a blush with brown or peach undertones. It works like a bronzer to bring out the natural color in your skin.

Hair Trend: Glossy, Shiny Hair

For her appearance on the CW Morning Show in New York City, new mom Padma Lakshmi showed off radiant skin and hair. To keep your strands luminous, watch what you eat—studies have shown that foods rich in olive oil, omega-3 fatty acids and protein contribute to the growth of healthy, shiny hair. Supplements containing Omegas 3 and 6 (Borage Seed Oil) increase hair shine and vitamins B, C, and Cystine promote healthy hair and nail growth.

At the recent Nakshatra Vivaah Collection launch Katrina showed off some subtle smoky eyes, perfectly highlighted cheeks and some glossy lips. To get her look, start off with using a small, fluffy brush, blend a peachy-pink eye shadow across your lids, apply a pearly nude eye shadow on your brow bones and blend the two together. Apply black eyeliner along your upper lids only. Layer on black mascara. Apply the same peachy-pink eye shadow in your lower lash lines, to really open up your eyes. Rub a peachy cream blush on the apples of your cheeks and top your cheekbones with a pearlescent highlighter. Apply a rosy-nude lipgloss to get glossy and plump lips like Katrina's.

Make-up Trend: Uber Smoky Eyes and Peachy Nude Lips

Looking sultry and absolutely flawless on the cover of FHM India, Minissha Lamba shows us when done right, black shadow, liner, looks striking and not overpowering. To get her look, sweep black powder eye shadow onto your lids and blend to slightly above the crease. Apply a pearly highlighter on your brow bones, and blend well. Line your upper and lower lash lines with black kohl, including the inner "V", make sure to connect them. Brush black mascara onto your upper lashes and lower lashes. Brush on a peachy blush on your cheeks with muted shimmer, so it doesn't compete with the smokiness of the eyes. Apply some concealer on your lips to neutralize them, apply a peachy nude lipstick and top it off with a gloss in a similar shade.

Make-up Trend: Fresh Spring Look

Glowing skin, soft cat eyes and nude lips enhanced Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's natural beauty on the latest issue of Hello! India. Brush brown powder eye shadow over your lids, stopping at the creases, and wing out the color toward the outer edges. Starting at the creases, blend a nude powder eye shadow up to your brow bones. Rim a brown eye pencil along your lower lash lines, apply black eye liner on your upper lid and wing it slightly at the outter corners. Swipe some black mascara on your upper and lower lashes. Using a blush brush, apply a pink highlighter to your cheekbones. To finish off apply a beige-nude lipstick.

Make-up Trend: A Springtime Red Lip

Rekha and Sonam Kapoor show us that age is not a factor when it comes to a classic red lip. On the latest cover of Filmfare they show us red lips are appropriate in any season. If you're a big fan of red lips and are unsure how to wear them in the spring, look for a shade that's slightly more pink. Also, skip matte formulas which can feel too stiff. A swipe of sheer balm will give even bold colors a lightweight and airy feeling.

Make-up Trend: Violet Lip Stain

On the latest issue of Elle India, Lakshmi Menon transformed into a beach goddess. Take the violet lip shade she sported on location for the cover. Makeup artist Clint Fernandes applies champagne and bronze shadows around the star's eyes and contoured her face with a pearlescent shimmer before adding the finishing touch. "I blended a violet stain on her cheeks and her lips," said Clint. The effect? A modern version of I'm wearing make-up, but not really.

Make-up Trend: Natural Nude Blush

Perhaps because she was taken away by so many of her fans' loving messages, Kareena Kapoor's cheeks were full of natural color, she glowed on Karan Johar's show Lift Kara De. To give yourself a boost that's just as believable, look for a sheer pink blush with brown undertones. Swirl on the apples of your cheeks, sweeping upwards towards your temples. The wider application and deeper color will help you avoid the made-up, doll look.

Make-up Trend: Nude Lips

Bipasha Basu is synonymous with sex appeal and changing up her look ever so often, but when it comes to her lipstick, she tends to take a more understated approach. Take the nude look she sported on the latest issue of Marie Claire India. If you want to try a more neutral lip shade, blot your mouth with a dab of concealer, then top with sheer gloss. The concealer will soften the natural color of your lips; the gloss will keep you from looking washed out.
